The real fun of Quake 2 comes from its varied selection of weapons. Most players actually wonder which weapon to use during the game. Thankfully, it is possible to kill any opponent with any weapon. This even includes the blaster because back in Quake I, the feable shotgun did little to succumb a player carrying a loaded 99 rocket rocket-launcher.

All of the weapons perform at their best in different situations. Fortunately, we have good long distance weapons such as the railgun or short distancers like the super shotgun. Here, we will guide you through each weapon thoroughly.

Thanks to Stomped for the amazing weapon pics

Blaster

Background: The blaster is your default weapon, inaccurate and weak. It is also called "a beacon" because it gives away your position to much stronger players. Shoot this thing means "Come to Papa" to other players.

Pros: Stings. Takes away 15 points of health. Great for those weak players coming out of a firefight or those who get lagged behind. Infinite ammo!

Cons: Slow fire. Opponents can easily dodge the blasts coming from this gun. Doesn't work too well from long range.

Bottom Line: If you have a better weapon, use it! Never go one on one with this baby.

Strategy: Get up close and personal. Try not to get too close to opponents with rockets. From personal experience, the blaster actually works well against players with railgun in the Frag Pipe as long as you do some fancy jumping and footwork. Corner an opponent, and jump repeatedly in his or her face unless he or she has a super shotgun in which case you die in one up close shot. Yet, in general, run if you are sighted with a blaster.

Shotgun

Background: Weapon made famous from the good old days of Doom and Doom II.

Pros: Better than a blaster. Use it when you've got nothing on you. The weapon hits instantly, and the shells are dispersed in a defined area. Closer hits with this baby can make an opponent groan.

Cons: Sucks from long range. The use of it in DM levels such as the Edge is entirely futile. Aiming is a must, and reload time is a lot slower than the blaster.

Bottom Line: It's better than nothing, yet it still makes players with rocket launchers go after you.

Strategy: Practice your aiming with it since aiming is the key to using this weapon successfully. Stay far away from players with RLs, and always do some fancy footwork in front of railers. Jumping helps in your aiming, so while you are jumping, aim at the same time.

Super Shotgun

Background: The big daddy of the shotgun.

Pros: Packs a HUGE punch. If used in very close combat, this baby can suck the life out of just about anyone. Only uses 2 shells for its horrendous power. Uses "hit scan" which means the shells hit instantly. They even have a greater spread effect than the normal shotgun.

Cons: Slow firing rate. Utterly disgusting from long range.

Strategy: Get in close, aim, and fire. If done correctly, it should take out a huge portion of your opponents health. Trap a newly spawned player, and he/she will see the sky again.

Machinegun

Background: Your "old man" death weapon. Like all other machineguns in ral life, this one recoils.

Pros: A constant peckering at a guy's back makes him wish he had looked behind him. Takes away 8 points of health, but if fired continuously, your opponent may succumb very quickly. Takes out anyone who comes out of a firefight. Hits instantly as well.

Cons: Recoils back, and automatically shoots up in single player mode. In multiplayer, this is eliminated. The bullets from the gun do not take up a lot of area, so it may be difficult to hit opponents on ledges.

Strategy: Circle strafing helps out significantly if you are able to do so. Your opponent remains in your line of sight, while you are moving in a nearly perfect circular path.

Chaingun

Background: The great equalizer is back from Doom.

Pros: Annihilates everybody. Dishes out an awesome 120 points per second when at max speed. It's hard to avoid the spray from the gun, so opponents will have a tough time defeating you. When used with the railgun, you are virtually unstoppable. Since railguns usually leave your opponent hanging at 10 health or 20 health at the most, chainguns leave your wounded opponent little room to escape. Besides, firing this behemoth at railers can scare the shit out of them.

Cons: Ammo is like popcorn. Long spin up and spin down delays can hinder your attack on a player. It's loud too, and opponents can easily detect where you are. This makes you extremely vulnerable.

Strategy: Use this with the railgun (see pros) or against players with railguns. Follow your opponent, and stay far away from rockets if you can. You can still destroy rockets up close, but a few well placed rockets could end your day.

Grenade Launcher

Background: Players love or hate 'em. These hings can become very annoying yet effective in tight matches.

Pros: VERY effective in small rooms with cramped peops. Launch a few of these grenades in a room, and people would wish they had seen you first. Or, you might lob them from a high ledge such as the Edge to annihilate those preoccupied at the bottom. It has amazing power. It is more powerful than the rocket launcher in some cases because it deals a cool 150 points per grenade in the face. Ones that explode later, can still deal massive damage to that combat armor or megahealth guy.

Cons: Likewise, this thing can be extremely hazardous to yourself. Remember the grenades you lobbed before or else you are toast, and you might even lose a frag because of this. It is not very effective against players from a distance.

Strategy: Lob them from high up or inside a small room (see pros). This can grab you a few kills in a matter of seconds. Scatter the grenades in all directions if facing a very "jumpy" foe, and immediately get out of there. You might take some damage, but since you are the first to escape from your own trap, your opponent may be dealt with even more damage. When being chased launch a grenade at a wall in front of you. This can take out your hunter immediately.

Rocket Launcher

Background: The favorite of everyone, and hated by everyone.

Pros: Formidable power. The rockets have splash effect, so if you shoot them at a wall or at the floor near your opponent, your opponent we receive massive damage. Therefore, there is no need to shoot right at your foe. It is effective against any other weapon, and especially great against railguns. The rockets can get you to higher places i.e. through rocket jumping.

Cons: The splash effect could hurt you, so be careful when firing up close. The rockets have some serious flight time, so it may be difficult to hit opponents from far away.

Strategy: Fire at the wall and floor near your opponent (see pros). You should always move backwards while shooting because your opponent will probably move forwards to chase you. Yet, your rockets are moving forwards, so as a result, your rockets will hit him first and give you enough time to dodge any upcoming projectiles he may have. "Death from above" actually comes from the rocket launcher :)

Hyperblaster

Background: "Hyper lagger" is another name for it due to its extreme lag on modems and servers. Makes some funny noise, spins, and annihilates your foe.

Pros: The spin up and spin down delays are short, so it is a tad better than the chaingun. It shoots the same ammo as the blaster, and it is rather effective in close combat. It would take only a matter of miliseconds to frag a newly spawned player. It's bright and it's fast.

Cons: Extremely pitiful from long range because the blasts have some flight time such as the rocket. It doesn't hit your enemy instantly like the chaingun, so only use it at close to medium range. Not very useful on modem servers because it makes the entire game lag.

Strategy: Use it in close combat, never from far away. Use circle strafing for continues damage to your opponent, and if you see wounded players coming out of a firefight, use it! because one of these blasts deals 15 points of health.

Railgun

Background: Players who can use this pride themselves. Instant, and dangerous. Makes you feel like a sniper yourself.

Pros: Deals a cool 100 points per slug. It's instant, and it can travel through multiple opponents, as long as they are in a straight line. If you perfect your aiming, you can be EXTREMELY formidable and unstoppable to anyone. Particularly effective against newly spawned players. Use it against preoccupied players. They will never know what hit them. This gun is the best from long range, ok at medium range, and poor at close range unless you have good skills. In addition, the only way to hit players jumping from above is to use this weapon.

Cons: Not very effective against chaingun though. The chaingun can blind your vision prohibiting you from aiming correctly. By the time you shoot one slug, you might be dead the next second. The railgun has some serious reload time, so it may take a while to kill your opponent. Most players find it very difficult to use when the gameplay is laggy.

Strategy: When you want to take a break from the action, stay in a dark or very hidden area to snipe anyone that comes by. Very effective for camping, but I wouldn't advice you to camp anyway. On laggy servers, always aim a tiny bit ahead of your opponent. Hopefully, he or she moves in the same original direction, and as a result, he/she will definitely be hit. On rail only type games, when you see your opponent trying to jump a little bit to the side of you, move your mouse in that direction, and turn as far as you can, and shoot. About 90% of the time, he/she will be dead. Try to crouch when shooting. Since the railgun hits at only one point, it is very wise to be as small as you can.

BFG 10K

Background: When everyone must die, accept no substitutes. It's so powerful, some servers disable it.

Pros: Kills almost anyone unless you have the megahealth WITH 100 armor. Just shoot it inside a room where you hear lots of explosions or noises, and wait for the announcements to come up..."blablabla saw the green lights of blablabla's BFG." Shoot this baby up at the ceiling and it will still kill people as long as they are in its line of sight. Shoot it directly at someone, and observe the ludicrous gibs.

Cons: If players sight you with the BFG, they will actually leave their own personal battle and come straight for you, so be careful when using this. I advice you to have some armor when using the weapon. Never ever shoot up close to someone. It's even worse than the rocket launcher. The BFG needs a lot of time to warmup, so plan your movements readily. Always watch your back because it isn't so hard to see someone carrying a big freakin' gun.

Strategy: Try not to shoot at a wall because it does waste 50 cells. Other than this, you can shoot it anyway you want and you will still obliterate your opponent.
